CONCRE — CONCRETE FORMWORK

In construction, the term forms or formwork describes the temporary structures that hold wet concrete in place until it sets. Formwork gives concrete shape and dimensions. Depending on circumstances, formwork can be built from several kinds of materials, including wood, metal, plastic and various combinations of these. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to explain the purpose of concrete formwork, describe general safety guidelines to followed on a jobsite, demonstrate the use of common formwork hardware and fabricate forms, from both standard and PERI formwork systems. FIRST — STANDARD FIRST AID & CPR

First aid is emergency help given to an injured or suddenly ill person using readily available materials. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR is artificial circulation that cause blood to flow through the body to give a person a chance of survival. Throughout the course participants will learn the proper way and proper time to perform these life saving techniques, as well as legal boundaries involved with First Aid and CPR. FOREMA — FOREMAN TRAINING

This course allows participants to learn about the responsibilities of a UBC foreman. The skills required of a foreman, such as communication, job planning, scheduling, completing reports and managing a crew are all discussed. The central role of the foreman as the guardian of crew safety on the job site is explained thoroughly. The importance of interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution, problem solving and negotiating are presented. LEV&TR — LEVEL & TRANSIT

Construction surveying and layout involves locating and marking the locations of the points necessary for building new structures, remodeling existing ones, and installing new equipment. This process is commonly known as giving line and grade. Layout work also requires the skilled use of specially designed tools such as the transit level, transit, and theodolite to establish line and level grade. Some of the tasks involved are marking a point; laying out and extending lines; plumbing a point; laying out an angle; plumbing a column; and doing building layouts. This course provides and introduction to layout and leveling instruments, as well as some refresher math required for use in combination with those instruments.. WELD — INTRODUCTION TO WELDING

This course starts with the history and development of welding. Emphasis is given throughout the manual to the hazards of welding to the safety measures required to weld and cut without injury. Students also receive an introduction to the science of metallurgy. The major kinds of cutting are each discussed in separate chapters:oxy-fuel cutting, plasma arc cutting and carbon arc gouging. Sheilded metal, gas metal, flux cored, and gas tungsten arc welding are discussed in detail. The power sources used in each type of cutting or welding are explained . Electrode holders, guns, torches and the proper ways to hold them and use them are also covered. Students will also learn how to recognize and read welding symbols. Practical portion implements elements learned during the theory portion. PPE Required: Please bring hard hat, safety boots, safety glasses.
